Final night
Well, tonight is the final night. Been a long road, but we're here.
I have updated marks for most, but some will not be happy. Look at your own blogs and see if you have all of the iTunes U posts done. All four are already due. If you don't have that done, then prepare to be disappointed. I will do this first.
Keep in mind that tonight is the night to drop the class without full disclosure.
I have an APA style paper for my class completed. I may or may not present it as a power point to the class. Depends.
Finally, I will have an exam review for us, but it will also be posted on this blog.

iTunes Blog post four
For this last blog post, I'm wondering why. Perhaps you could answer this one with me or for me. Why are the universities and colleges going this route to teaching? What possible advantages are there for them? What possible rewards could there be for how much money they would make? Isn't giving this stuff away for free ... well, free?
How IS your course going, anyway? I've done three lectures in the Yale Astronomy class. The lecture about discovering "Hot Jupiters" was a lot of higher math, but something that I thought was kind of cool.
A good question would be why I wanted to learn it, but ... that's not the point. I did learn about it, man. Something that I wanted to learn about is stuck in my head.
Awesome.
That's the point. Learning stuff I want to learn, man.
Right, off we go.

iTunesU Blog post three
Blog post three:
In about 300 words (please, include some screen shots or other visuals) with using good design principles, tell me about two lectures that you have gotten through in your iTunesU course. A really good idea would be to post a link of the lecture in your post and to provide an embedded link in the post, too.
Like this link or like this one.
Are these ideas that you have posted about things that you are interested in learning in your next phase or level of your education? If not, why did you pick this course to do for this unit?
Due date for this post is on the right hand side of this web page, under "iTunesU unit due dates". Have a look, my mom will.

APA Style report post
This is a picture of the "Old School"; the one that most of you participated in throughout your academic career in high school. The teacher is at the front of the room, acting as a vessel of knowledge that fills the students with the same knowledge.
And this is a picture of a "New School classroom", is the one I tried very hard to set up in this class. Students have a teacher as a focus for learning, using tools like Google, YouTube and Khan Academy to learn material at home and share it/collaborate with others either online or in person with a group of people who are motivated to learn the same or similar ideas.
So the APA Report that you will write will be about 300 words. The subheadings you will use (and write about in your body paragraphs) will be these: "Use of blogs in my learning", "Use of Twitter (or other social networking sites) in my own learning, and finally "My personal ideas about online/blended learning". The other two headings will be, of course, "Introduction" and "Conclusions".
Due April 11 in class.

CA for this course
Here it is, all written up fancy:
I also found the iTunesU Unit for the course, too. Odd that last night I couldn't find it on my laptop. Meh, life goes on.
Here is Post number Two for the iTunesU Unit, too:
In about 300 words, I need you write about how this type of learning might be considered "forward looking". That is to say, write about how this new type of learning is using advances in technology to the advantage of both the person learning and the school or person teaching. Can there be any advantages to this type of "always on" learning? Can there be any cost reductions to using the technology you already use to try and expand how and when you learn new ideas for life or work?
As an example of this new format, I will point you to Remax, the real estate company. As a part of the training for their agents, they are to download an app to their phones and do their training on their own time. The link is here if you are interested.

April 2 night
ok, so... I do have updated marks that I will be showing students tonight. I also have the in class essays marked, too. They will be returned to students this evening.
I was trying to get a most accurate mark for some of my students by checking for blog posts, but the blogs have not been updated.
um, what?
in any case, I will have the students' blogs up to show the rest of the class their own efforts, so tonight might be pretty enlightening.
right, some of what we are going to do tonight revolves around the iTunes U course I have selected for this unit. The link is on the right, so if you are interested, have a peek. Should be a cool one.
I also intend to share the links for the most recent blog post of your classmates on the iTunes U Unit, too. Hopefully well be able to have some "back channel" discussion about online classes, too.
The Culminating Activity is something I've got to show you tonight, too. I will have some discussion of what your PLN should look like tonight, too. We will start the discussion with a you tube video and progress from there. If all goes well, I should have the rubric and list of elements for the assignment tonight too.
Finally, as mentioned above, Id like to be able to show updated marks. Hopefully, with all the blog posts completed.

Wednesday March 28 iTunes U Unit Post one
Stop shhhh talking. Seriously. Do your in class essay.
Right, the first topic for Shhhhh your next unit. Shhhh. I have a bucket of shush right here. It's a unit on iTunesU.
You should have picked a shhhhh course for yourself by shhhhh now. I'm kind of hoping you have, anyway. It's kind of important for you to pick on to shhhhh finish the course. Shhhh.
In cany case, watch this video and tell me what you think about using Youtube/Khan Academy in learning material for your in class courses. Believe it or not, the way that this gentleman presents material is quite good for learning. Here is one of the random ones that I've watched and actually learned stuff from. Your reflection should be about 300 words and have at least one graphic element (that would be either a picture or an embedded video, please.
And break up your block text too, for goodness' sake! I just saw this blog post. This... this is an awesome post. Level Four. Do this.
Personally, I think it's genius. There is a TED Talk by the Khan dude himself on Youtube as well. You might want to take a look at it. If you get the right one, there is a rather special guest that drops by at the end of the talk. hmmm... I guess I'll have to offer a Tim Horton's card for the student that tells me the name of the surprise guest at the end of that specific talk next time.
Oh, and by the way, here is a Prezi about the APA Sytle report. I hope.
I guess Imma markin' sompin likes a few essmerays 2nite ... lolz

Fourth Blog post
OK, things are going ... well, I guess. I will have updated marks. Would have had them last night but there was a creepy guy in the back row not letting me get the marks inputted. You can let him know your displeasure tomorrow.
I'll rat him out for the angry mob.
In any case, here is the assignment for the fourth blog post for the Shakespeare Unit:
Watch each of the following "Party Scenes" from Romeo and Juliet and tell me why there is such a major difference in the way audiences percive the major characters.
Here's the first version from 1996:
And from the 1968 version:
and yes, you have to watch this version from 1954:
It is basically this same scene, but why is one version so much "Better" than the others?
OK, due by Friday - will be included in the unofficial mid-term mark on April 4th. Should be along side the in-class essay you are writing on Wednesday.
You DO know you are writing an in class essay on Wednesday, right?

Monday March 26
First I will make a quick announcement with good news for the essay we're doing in class on Wednesday. I will not write it here, but I'll let you know in class.
http://www.oawa.ca/default.aspx
Should be exciting.
Then, we'll do the presentations. With a twist.
While the presentations are going, I want you to open the "back channel" the twitter hashtag we've been using (#ndns2012)and keep up the conversation about studying Shakespeare here and the troubles/successes you've been seeing while being in this class. I'd also really really recommend you do some putting together of some ideas for your essay for next time.
If we have time at the end of the class, I will do a quick thing on APA style reports and or see an almost complete mark update for you for this course. Sort of, not complete.
Finally, I have the last two blog posts marked as well as the "in class" blog post from last time marked and ready to go back to you. The essay, and the fourth and final blog post we'll assign tonight, as the last items in the mid term mark I will show you April 4th - a week before you should drop the course before disclosure.

Shakespeare Blog post Number 3
Before doing anything else, go and watch the embedded video on the blog on Wednesday March 19. Then, go to Twitter and do a search (#ndns2012) for the talk we hosted last night. Re-read some of the comments and complete a minimum 300 word blog post on your own blog about the following:
1)Were there any points/comments/ideas made that you agree with? Do you Disagree with any of the ideas that were either tweeted or presented in class?
2) How do YOU overcome the frustration of studying something you have an innate prejudice against? How can a student overcome a barrier in their own education (like “I hate Shakespeare” or “I don’t like the way that class is being taught”) to become a better student/learner?
Due: Saturday March 24 by midnight!
Wednesday, March 21, 2012
So ... Wednesday March 21
Right, tonight we're going to be doing a bunch of material together.
Before we do anything, here's an assignment I want you to start with ... it goes on your blog ASAP. Work on it on paper to show me what you got if you have to.
First, we're watching this Vimeo Video:
Then, we're going to think about watching Shakespeare rather than reading it. That will be the third blog post for the Shakespeare Unit and it will be awesome because we're going to work on it together. On Twitter. #ndns2012
Thirdly, as you are working on that blog post about reading Shakespeare, you are going to show me what you've been reading/researching and doing for your in class essay in a week.
Fourth, I'm going to show you some ... um .. "interesting" sentences that I read today on your blogs. For real. We need to keep working on your writing.
Lastly, I will show you the selection I picked to base my iTunes U unit on. That is, this is the course on which I will base the assignments I will do and blog about in our next unit together. If I give the assignments to you, I will also be doing them.

Something quick for tonight
So ... an interesting thing happened to me today. I realized that my lesson plan for tonight has to be ... redone.
In the mean time, I'd like my students to read this article and reflect in a post on their own blog about which skills they have and which they do not. Total length should be at least 300 words.
A good blog post will include an image (copyright free, right?) and perhaps an embedded video.
Make sure your Second post for Shakespeare is done (it was due at Midnight March 20, by the way) and I'd be on the research into my play and deep into picking an iTunes course to study for the next unit.
Why? Cuz there's not that much time left in the course.
Last thign: I should have a mark update for tonight, too.

Who's going when
Below is the list of Shakepeare plays (I will not put student names on the internet, sorry) and their order. If you're not sure what play you are doing or anything else, drop a comment on the blog or on twitter
Please note, you have to unprotect you tweets for me to see them. If they are protected, I can't see them ... 'cuz they're ..um ... protected.
Hey look, something timely from the internet!

Things that make the teacher go "hmmm..."
You might be thinking of this song from the C+C Music Factory:
But, no, I'm thinking about this (very short) article today...
I wonder what would happen if you were to asked to check out the blogs of your fellow students... things that make you go "hmmmm..."

Monday March 19
Right I love tonight. Make sure you read the other post for today about your assignment. It's right under this post. Anyway, it's Monday and we've got lots to talk about. I'm going to start with:
1) Essay help. Yeah, have to. I'm thinking this will be a .ppt, as a few did not listen to me when I did it as a marker show on the white board.
2) Sign ups for the Shakespeare presentation Dates. Hopefully this will go smoothly. Actually, We'll go by numbers. I'll have the list posted soon.
3)How to embed a video on your blog. Pay attention, because you have to do this for your next blog post on Shakespeare. It's easy ... here's the video:
4) "show me" the research you've been doing for your Shakespeare essay, which will be done in class on March 28, 2012. If I get time, I'll be able to do one on ones with the 56% (13 out of 23) of the students who handed their essay in on time.
5) How to do a list of works cited on Easybib.com
6) looking for an iTunes U course for our next and last unit, as I had to cut something, and it looks like the "electronic text" unit will have to go. Sign ups for this will be on Wednesday. So, here is the process I'd recommend you follow to find a course for yourself:
First, start with the University you want to attend next year. (McMaster)
Second, perhaps look at what you want to study (Engineering, for example)
Third, look for something you are interested in (For me, Astronomy)
Lastly, something for everyone. Or you Android users can try here for a solution / workaround for your technical issues with this assignment.
Second Blog post for Shakespeare Unit
Work on this in class, in front of me. I will try to get us some lab time, but don't rely on me for that.
Here's the topic:
After checking out your play's listing on Wikipedia, what do you know to be innaccurate or misleading about the main character of your play that is posted there?
Post is due by Tuesday at midnight, on your blog or emailed ot the teacher at the previously mentioned email address for those less technically inclined.
Right on with tonight! Agenda to be posted here shortly, too.

First blog post for Shakespeare Unit
Your response to this question is due on your blog by Midnight March 10.
Yeah, I gave you an extra day. It's all good.
After doing some looking into your play, what can you "expect" from learning about the play?
What I mean by that question is this: Since you are not doing the same play as the rest of the class, how do you expect to study, research and discover for yourself about this play?
post length should be about 400 -500 words.
oh, and check this link out, man

Recap Wed March 7
Right, here are the pics I promised:
Essay topics for the Culminating In class essay March 28.
Blog post assignments - first one will be up shortly
and ....
the presentations for Shakespeare ...
Right ... I'm going to work on the Google Docs thing that was a fail for the class. I will post the List of Date (the agenda for each of the remaining classes as a Google Doc or as a Prezi by the end of the week. Watch for the notice of this by text.
Here is the link for the Complete works of William Shakespeare (reduced). Trust me, it's funny:
I also said I'd put a link to a bunch of Hollywood Bollywood films. Here it is. When you click on it, you have to scroll down. Watch the first one, for sure:
Ok, have a great break ... get your blog posts done for your play!

Wednesday March 7
First things first " Show me" the pic of your "Google search" homework. If you need to get it done now ... look at the previous post.
Second, we're going to be doing some more looking at "How to research"
Thirdly, while we are in the lab and we'll do some in class work with Google Docs.
Fourth -I'd also like you to do some reasearch and posting on your blog with me sitting behind you in the "nagging" seat tonight. We'll work up a list of topics together and get looking at them together. If you need help blogging, this will be when we'll be able to help each other.
Lastly, I need you to vote on the poll from Monday. It's sad that I have to remind you to do that. Here's a sad picture to remind you:
Sign up for the Remindme texts ... it's making me sad.

For wednesday...
Hello everyone. Here's what I need you to do for tomorrow's class:
Ising this link, “How to use google”
do a semi-advanced search on your play. For example type in this:
nice results, right? Specific to the topic (in this case Romeo and Juliet, obviously) and ... right near me, as it is with the Burlington Public Library, too.
Here is a link that will help you get better at Snippit, which I used to get the image above.
When you get a list like this, take a Snippit image (or a Command+Shift+4 image if you are on a Mac product) and save it to your HD. Be ready to show me this on Wednesday. Or take a pic with your phone. An image is needed for this.
2)start/continue to look at/researching your Shakespeare play and finding an electronic book to study for this course. Perhaps a short primer on how to do that through the BPL Yes, it's a smidge early, but there's going to be something to hand in the day we get back from Break.
3)Finally, there will be a #ndns2012 conversation on Twitter tonight at 9pm. Shouldn't be too long, we're just testing out the system. Be a part of it. Will be fun ...
Picture is unrelated.

Monday March 5
First things first ...vote in the previous posts' poll. It will be live during class time. I checked today - after I sent a text out to check the blog, only one vote by Monday at 10:45am... disheartening...
"The plan for today"
1) finish presentations
2) hand in polished essays on dead trees. Sorry trees.
3) how to turn a .ppt into a Prezi ...and then an actual example ... unless the wireless kicks up a fuss...
4) Quick review of Cornell note taking idea for taking notes. And a demonstration of Dropbox... hopefully. Depends on the wireless.
5) "Using City of Burlington research tools” and "Research tools at Major Universities" - this will be on the screen - you will need to take notes, but I will publish it online later.
6)“How to use google” + online assignment. Due by the Tuesday Midnight. Questions on the next post, this time. Next time ... they'll be on Twitter...
7)start/continue to look at/researching your Shakespeare play and finding an electronic book to study for this course. Perhaps a short primer on how to do that through the BPL
For Wednesday:
a)Have some research posted on your blog about your play. If you need a reminder of which play is yours, let me know.
b)go to this link and poke around to see if the University you want to attend will have online content. If that just isn't you thing, check out Athabasca University and see if what they have appeals to you. Be ready on Wednesday to be able to talk/ write about what you saw and looked into with this.

Wed Feb 29
Tonight we got a lot of stuff coming down the pipe.
1)First off, a presentation "by some" ... I need about 10 to go tonight. We'll get that done first. If more than ten go, all the gooderer ... ;)
2)I'd like to see them do some work on / show me some essay work - it would be awesome to see a draft version of the essay.
3) app of the day
4) pick a Shakespeare play - need about an hour to get this done. Tonight.
4.5)Remind Me 101 - remind Chesser. 'nuff said.
5) take another look at iTunesU. It's going to be another unit we study AND it's going to help you when you are away at University next year.
Or in Boucher's case, off to here. (Makes you want to learn how to blog, doesn't it, Monsieur Boucher?
5.5) make sure I have your blog address.
6)stuff for next Monday:
Find an "electronic text" - see Project Gutenburg, iBooks, audiobooks, Librivox ... among other places. Take a look around and find something you've thought about reading and get reading on it.
Search for a video version of your Shakespeare Play on Youtube. If not there, try the Burlington Public Library. After that, then come talk to me about it.
7) your webquest assignment number 1 on your blog by Midnight Sunday March 44 - make sure I have your blog address so that I can mark it. Ironically, I will be giving you this assignment on paper.
OK, we'll see you on Monday ... w000t!

Recap of Monday
Ok, tonight. I;m starting this post while you are watching me.
Hi, Boucher. How's it going?
Here's a random pic from my hard drive:
In any case, we started off tonight with a bit on poet presentation. Here is the prezi
For those of you who wonder how I did that, see this link here.
Secondly, we did the really important work together on the essay. This is where I was a little disappointed, to be frank. Lots need to work here for Wednesday. Get it done, man
Next we did a bit of help with blogging and we did a bit on iTunes and iTunesU, too. Here's a video embedded about video embedding:
and here's a little more info about iTunesU
we talked a little about design, templates and keeping the blogs we're working on updated. S'all good, yo. We also watched a bit of a couple of videos on EBSCOHost ... the login information is on the "Electronic Products" page you got from me last week. It's simply awesome.
Lastly, we took a look at the plays by William Shakespeare. I will go and find a rather cool pic I took last summer. It has a great idea: the video running on one side of the screen with the electronic text on the other side. Simply perfect.
Right, see you Wednesday - get the presentations and essay work done!
Hi, Boucher. How's it going?
Here's a random pic from my hard drive:
In any case, we started off tonight with a bit on poet presentation. Here is the prezi

The list, essay help and a little help for blogging
Right, the list in the previous post is the list from which you are going to pick a play to study. You'll notice that some of the the standards in the regular schools are not there. I'll be honest, the last time that someone wanted to switch from an "odd" play (like the ones on the list) and do a "regular" play (like from regular school) ... they didn't do so well.
Besides, I'm honestly thinking you want to try something different for this course.
In any case, if this were me, I'd look into three or four of the plays (Wikipedia is ok for this) and see what interests you. As you can see, there are three types of plays: Tragedies (which you've seen a lot of in high schools), Comedies (which you have not) and History plays (which I will assume most wouldn't know about). All are good, none are "Boring and stupid" and ... there is a video for each and every one. Be creative where you look for it. (Hint: think the local library system, Youtube or other parts of the internet)
In any case, I was also the target of some spam this weekend; Just to note, I don't respond to individual emails. That's just too much for me right now. In any case, the gist of the emails was that these people didn't know anything about blogging, which is ok.
My question is ... if you don't know something, what do you usually do? Email the teacher, or search on Youtube? Here's a hint/screenshot of a search I did on Youtube:
I'm still getting a question or two about when I'm going to hand out the essay topics. Hmmm ..I think I said that you are going to have to develop your own essay topics last Wednesday. I'm pretty sure I said that... but I'll say it again:
You are going to develop your own essay questions and answer them in a well written thousand word MLA format essay.
The interesting questions were about the presentation: I'm going to leave that up to you, but I'd post it to my blog, hten have it on me (on a USB drive or something) just in case. I made you do that "Worst Case Scenario" assignment for a purpose. And ... and the essay is NOT to be posted to you blog. Hand that in on paper.
Speaking of which:
1)OK, now then, I'm hoping that my students are getting ready for an little essay writing help tomorrow; 'cuz that's what we're working on for a bit.
2)Then, some help with a blogging;
3)then, I'm hoping an example of what I'm looking for in the Poet Presentation which start on Thursday.
4)Finally, and I'm hoping we get this in, a picking of Plays my students will study.
Fast? You betcha.
Ok, see you tomorrow!

Tonight ... Feb 22
This should be an interesting class. Let's hope that we can all just ... get through it together.
We're going to start out with a simple warm up - see the overhead presentation for details. All about "Digital resilience". I'm also going to come around and look for the Poet/Poetry assignment notes you might have taken/have on you. See previous post.
After that, we're going to get the Unit One outline and work through what I mean by an online text. I'm pretty sure everyone knows what an MLA format essay is, and so I will cover that and an APA Style report, too. Someday you'll thank me, trust me.
I think we also need to do a bit on web design. I went through as many of your blogs as I could (some have bad typing skills and bad "following instruction" skills, so I missed a few, but the majority I saw were ... a little dull. I'm pretty sure you are not that way, so, let's show you how to move stuff on the internet.
I have a "three in one" presentation tonight, too. It will be about What you should be doing for "Digital resilience", tools at your disposal for research (not jsut google) and finally, "how NOT to do a presentation for 4U English upgrade classes.
Due dates will be posted by tomorrow, too. Check the blog and Twitter for details!

Wrap up for tonight and assignment for next Wednesday
Thanks to everybody for tonight, I really appreciate your patience and hard work. Seriously, it's awesome.
Here's a random picture from my hard drive in thanks:
In any case, expect a visit from me on your blogs by the end of business tomorrow. I'd like to just make sure all the links work and to confirm your choice of poet.
The assignment part:
Yeah, sorry, gotta do it.
First: Look into your poet in the usual places: YouTube, iTunes, wikipedia (cough, cough), Google and ... well, what ever else you can think. Post your findings (not a click and paste job) onto your blog ... or if you can't recall how to that, onto a Word doc and then into your Dropbox.
Oh, you have to watch that Dropbox video again; just make sure you have headphones, because you don't want your friends hearing that guys voice.
Second: Go back to the list at UofT and read all (or a good number) of the poems of your poet. Read them out loud. To your parents or guardians, your grandma who never hears from you, someone standing on the bus. Read them out loud, just to get a sense of the poems themselves. You night get lucky and hear one on Youtube.
Third: Watch this and do the three questions for at least three poems of the poet:
(By the way, if you are logged into your gmail account before watching that Youtube video, you'll be amazed at what tools you can now use. Favourite videos, make playlists of videos ... man, awesome stuff. Now, go play on teh Interwebs.
Be safe and we'll see you Wednesday Feb 22!

First post
Usually, when my students are getting their very first post ready, I tell them to write the line "Chesser told me to write this."
So, in order to keep that tradition up:
"Chesser told me to write this."
In any case, if you are reading this, it's a good bet that you are in my upgradeing class or know someone who is. This is going to be a "Flipped classroom". If don't understand what that is, click on that link and a nice clear explanation will be shown.
In any case, pay attention to the guy at the front of the room, he's nice and you should trust him.
Oh and see if this Google Doc works for you
